Mud Volleyball Rules of Play
Depending on the amount of teams registered, we may start pool play on Friday evening, August 9th. If so there will be a short Team Captain meeting for the teams playing on Friday at 5:00pm. For the remainder of the teams, there will be a team captain meeting at 7:30am in front of the flatbed by court #1. After the meeting the starting teams must get ready to play and the assigned officiating teams in place to officiate. There will be HHS volleyball girls and parents available to assist teams uneasy about officiating.
All players are recommended to wear shoes. No steel/metal cleats allowed. It is advised that you duct tape your shoes around your feet. Water socks may be the best. Bring goggles, knee pads, sunscreen, and sun glasses.
OVERALL: Play will follow USAV guidelines with special modifications for the mud.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT: Round Robin Play: There will be 6 teams per pool with each team scheduled (5) games in round robin play. Each team will play each of the other five teams assigned to their court two games to 25 points starting at 0 using rally scoring.
Seeding: All teams will advance to a single elimination tournament directly following pool play. The teams will be seeded according to their win/loss record. If two (2) teams are tied between win/loss record, the team that gains the highest seed will be the team that won the head to head match up between the two (2) teams. If more than two (2) teams are tied then the team with the greatest point spread will be the highest seeded team. If ties can not be broken then a flip of a coin will determine the highest seed.
Tournament Round: Each team will be guaranteed at least one (1) scheduled game in the tournament. The tournament will be single elimination and will begin as soon as the bracket can be formed and posted. Awards will be given to the champion and runner up in both the Competitive and Recreational divisions.
Game Guidelines
- Team Composition: A team consists of a maximum of six (6) players or eight (8) for recreational and a minimum of six (6) players. Two (2) players of each gender must be on the court at all times during the match.
- Forfeits: Teams that are more than 5 minutes late for the start of the match will forfeit. Prior to the 5-minute forfeit time, the opposing team will be awarded one point per 30 seconds the team is late. Forfeits count as a victory for the team that was present and a loss for the team that failed to show.
- First Serve: The team that is listed first in each match-up will serve first. The team receiving will have choice of side.
- Team Sides: Teams do not switch sides during round robin pool play.
- Scoring: RALLY SCORING. During round robin play, score begins at 0-0. The first team to score 25 points or more with a 2-point advantage is the winner of the game. There will be no cap.
- Round Robin Play Time Limit: There is no time limit. If we are unable to start and finish tournament play following pool play then tournament play will continue on Sunday the 11th of August. Teams and referees must keep the games on the courts moving quickly in order to complete pool play in a timely fashion.
- Playoff Round Time Limit: There is no time limit. All games are played to their conclusion.
- Rotation: The rotation must be in a clockwise direction. All rotations must eventually bring each player to the front and back rows in a predictable fashion.
- Front Row: A limit of three (3) designated front row players is in effect at all times.
- Time Outs: One thirty (30) second time-out is permitted per game by each team.
- Injury Time-Outs: If play is temporarily suspended due to an injury, the injured player must leave the court for at least one serve. A team may drop below the minimum player requirements for the current game in case of an injury.
- Serving: Teams rotate when receiving the serve, even the first serve.
TEAM PLAY
- Serves: The server is the back right player. The server must be positioned within 3 of the back line (either in front or behind). This means the server may be on the court. Loading the ball with mud is not permitted. If a served ball hits the net, it is a legal serve.
- Serve Reception: All serves must be taken with a legal hit. A serve may not be spiked or blocked by the opposing team.
- Body Hits: A ball may be played by any part of the body.
- Number of Hits: Each team may touch the ball up to three (3) times while the ball is on their side of the net. Blocks do not count as hits. The ball may be hit by any combination of men and/or women. Unlike standards of co-rec, it does not have to be touched by a woman.
- Spikes: Spiking is performed with one hand. Two handed spikes are a violation. Only front row players may spike in front of the 10 line. Again, men or women may spike.
- Blocks: Blocking is normally performed with two hands. Blockers may penetrate the plane of the net and may execute a power block. However, directed blocks are not permitted (catch and throw the ball down). Only the three front row players may block.
